Opuntia abjecta (Big Pine Key), “Keys Spanish Lady” (Florida sales only)
$30.00
Description
Opuntia abjecta – Big Pine Key, common name “Keys Spanish lady”, is an endangered Florida microendemic prickly pear cactus found only in the Florida Keys. This population is diploid and self-fertile, while others on other Keys such as Crawl Key and Long Key that are tetraploid aren’t. Each available plant in a limited quantity for now is a rooted pad sporting new pads. Photos of large plant in bloom is of my parent plants from which I took these cuttings. I was given this plant as a contribution to propagate by a Big Pine landowner with whom I’m doing a project to restock various endangered native and endemic cactus species to his property, while making them also available in cultivation to those who care about and grow Florida native plants. My cacti and seeds are ethically sourced.
***This species is state-protected, so I only sell these in Florida to others in Florida***.
I have about 45-50 available and will periodically root new batches of pads. I may delist this product when out of stock from time to time but will relist when available.
