Description

Cylindropuntia hystrix is a critically endangered shrubby cholla cactus only found in one location at Guantanamo, Cuba. It gets to about a foot tall. Hardiness zone 8b or higher. It is related to its famous cousin out west, Cylindropuntia bigelovii and is just as sticky with the barbed needles. Rare in cultivation, gorgeous and dangerous as it requires thick gloves and tongs to handle the barbed needles. Five plants available, rooted and grown from offsets from the mother plant given to me by a botanical gardens.  Cactus Island Nursery is a popular, reputable and licensed specialty cactus nursery (licensed Florida nursery). Open by appointment – ask for Jim. I can ship to the lower 48 except California – ask me and I’ll calculate a price for your U.S. zone. Please inquire for wholesale volume pricing. We have a generous selection of mostly uncommon, Florida-able and native Florida cactus grown from seed in the northern part of Williston.
